A new local radio service for Abergavenny?
We’re exploring the possibility of creating a new community radio service for Abergavenny and the surrounding area, including Llanfoist, Govilon and Gilwern.
We have submitted an Expression of Interest to Ofcom as part of its new process for considering additional FM community radio licences.
At this stage, there is no licence and no guarantee that Ofcom will invite a full application. Our aim is simply to make sure that Abergavenny is considered when Ofcom decides where new community radio licences could be advertised.

Why Abergavenny?
Abergavenny and its surrounding villages have an active community life, including local charities, businesses, sport, arts, music and events. However, the area does not have its own dedicated FM community radio station or locally focused small-scale DAB service.
We believe a modest service focused on Abergavenny and nearby communities could provide something genuinely useful and local.
What could the station offer?
The station could include:
- Local news and information
- Community groups and events
- Arts, culture and music
- Local sport
- Interviews and discussion
- Travel and emergency information
- Opportunities to learn radio, journalism, audio production and digital media
The exact service would be shaped by local people with different skills, interests and backgrounds.
What happens next?
Ofcom is considering Expressions of Interest from groups across the UK. If it decides that an FM community radio licence could be offered for Abergavenny, it will invite formal applications.
A full application would need a credible organisation, evidence of community support, programming and financial plans, technical arrangements, and a clear explanation of the benefits the station would provide.
Interested in getting involved?
We’d like to hear from anyone who thinks a local radio service for Abergavenny is worth pursuing. You do not need radio experience.
We’re particularly interested in people with experience or an interest in:
- Community organisations
- Journalism and local news
- Broadcasting, audio, music or technology
- Finance, fundraising or business
- Marketing and social media
- Governance and administration
- Local sport, culture and events
There is no major time commitment at this stage. The immediate aim is to form a small group willing to explore the project further if Ofcom invites an application.
